Planning your site and web presence

When it comes to creating a web design and a presence online, planning is king! A well-planned site which suits your needs should work for you for years into the future.

I don't believe that 'off the shelf' or 'quick fix' solutions work when it comes to web design and production. Before starting to build anything, it's important to understand what your needs really are, who your audience is, what you have to say to them and how you will manage your web presence into the future.

Visual design, logos and branding

One of the key phases when it comes to creating a website is coming up with the visual design. It is also one of the most important as the look and feel of your site will play a major role in communicating with your customers.

I will work with you to determine the image you wish to project online. I will then present a number of mocked up designs for further discussion, with one of them selected to refine until it is ready to be built.

I also work much the same way when it comes to print projects.

If you don't have a logo or brand identity or wish to change what you have prior to starting your project, I can work with you on this.

Website building and testing

Once your site is planned and the design decided upon, the building phase can commence.

I handcode the HTML and CSS for all sites I build, which - along with validation to check for any errors - ensures that code is logical, meets web standards and is best suited to what is being created.

I'm passionate about using standards compliant code, meaning your site is more likely to work seamlessly with new browsers into the future. In addition it can assist with search engine marketing, makes future site updates easier and even assists visually impaired users and others to engage with your site.

Cross-browser testing is essential for any site to make sure a wide array of visitors will not encounter any problems. I test my work in all major modern browsers and make any required changes.

Search engine and online marketing

I operate my own e-commernce business and know very well how essential search engine optimisation and good online marketing can be to the success of any online venture.

If your site isn't built from the ground up with search engine optimisation in mind then you could end up missing out on a world of opportunities for your business or organisation.

I will build your web project to ensure it is friendly to search engine bots (the software that cruises the net grabbing information for search engines). I can also help you to identify your most important keywords so you can make use of them in your content. Plus I can talk to you about link building strategies and can roll your new site out to major search engines for you.

Ongoing site maintenance

Any website will require some degree maintenance into the future. Most websites will need content updated at least occasionally if not very regularly.

If you have a content management system (CMS) implemented on your site you should be able to do this yourself, however, even the CMS will require ongoing maintenance and upgrades, usually undertaken by a web professional.

I can help you with any ongoing maintenance, whether content updates for static brochure sites or checking and maintenance of more complex sites.

Creation of printed material

Whether it's a business card, corporate brochure, newsletter postcard or flier, I can also help you with print work.

I can design and layout your project so that it is suitable for professional printing. In addition I can assist you to find a suitable printer for your needs and can provide PDFs for future office printing or online use.

Assistance with photography and more

Depending on your needs, I may be able to assist you with taking photographs for your web or print project.

I can also assist you to source suitable existing photographs and illustrations from image libraries for use in your project, ranging from imags with exclusive licenses through very inexpensive non-exclusive licenses.

If you require illustration work to be done, I can assist you by working with a professional illustrator.
